Marshall Bruce Mathers III a.k.a ``Eminem`` or ``Slim Shady`` was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on the 17th of October in 1972. He had a complicated childhood because his father abandoned the family before he was born, so his mother Deborah "Debbie" Mathers had to raise him alone with very little income. Deborah never managed to hold down a job for more than several months at a time, so they had to move frequently between Missouri and Detroit, Michigan. He had to switch schools 2-3 times a year.
Marshall did not do well at school. He says that he got beat up and bullied. When he attended Lincoln High School in Warren, Michigan he failed the ninth grade three times and eventually dropped out at the age of 17.
As a teenage dropout, Marshall found a way to express his passion for language, as well as to release his anger. He started attending rap battles. A "battle" is where two competitors take turns to insult each other through improvised rap lyrics. He proved highly skilled at such verbal sparring and became very respected in Detroit`s underground rap scene.
During this period of time Marshall began dating Kim Ann Scott, and in 1995 they had a daughter named Hailie Jade Scott. In 1999 when The Slim Shady LP got released Marshall and Kim Mathers married later that same year.
